5 Ways to Keep Your Engagement Ring Looking Like New
Your engagement ring is most likely your most treasured piece of jewelry. Your ring will rarely leave your finger, so it’s important that you take the steps to keep your rock looking just as nice as the day you received it. Here are our five tips to keep your ring looking shiny and new:
Take it off when you apply lotions and creams
Heavy lotions will leave a residue on your diamond, making it appear less brilliant. Some creams can even be harsh on the color of your ring. Also, colored gemstones and gold or platinum bands can lose their pigment if they become coated in lotions.
Have it cleaned professionally
If you clean your ring at home regularly, that’s a great start! Do so gently with warm water or even vodka. However, we recommend getting a professional cleaning at least once a year if you want your ring to stay as beautiful as the day you laid eyes on it. Antique rings and highly intricate settings especially require a professional cleaning. Residue and dirt can hide in any nook and cranny of your engagement ring.
Don’t wear it while cleaning
Much like your lotions, harsh chemicals can react with the metal of your engagement ring. Certain cleaning chemicals can give it a cloudy or dirty effect that’s difficult to remove. Not to mention, there’s always an added danger of losing your ring down a drain!
Store your ring properly
Try not to throw your ring just anywhere whenever it’s not on your finger. Gold is soft and can be easily damaged if it’s entangled with other jewelry or in a place that it will clunk around. It’s best to store your ring alone in a fabric-lined compartment. Also, try to avoid airtight containers. Some gemstones need to “breathe” to keep from cracking.
Avoid resizing more than once
Many women make the mistake of having their ring resized during and directly after pregnancy. Our suggestion? Hold off. Chances are your ring will fit again soon enough. After the initial resizing, too much tinkering can permanently damage your band and you run the risk of having to have your stone re-set altogether.
