Necklace Layering 101: 4 Tips to Master the Look
Layering necklaces is a timeless trend, but gone are the days of chunky, large pieces. Instead, the look now focuses on delicate and feminine pieces that can easily be switched in and out for a completely different look. Because of the tremendous flexibility that comes with layering necklaces, your look can range from ultra-feminine, to sexy, or timeless depending on your outfit or mood. Before you get started rummaging through your jewelry box, there are five simple tips to master the look.
- Start with a shorter chain. If you are layering over a scoop neck or V-neck shirt, a dainty pendant or chain works great. For shirts with a higher neckline, like a boatneck, be sure to start your layering below the neckline so your first necklace isn’t “fighting” to be seen.
2. Choose a second longer piece. Just an inch or two will do the trick, but add extra drama with a longer layer if you are wearing a deep V neckline. Be sure to keep things interesting here by choosing different textures, or if you’re feeling extra bold, different metals. Mix your gold and silver for a fearless approach to a classic look.
3. Less is not necessarily more when it comes to layering necklaces. Playing up necklaces is one of the oldest style tricks in the books, for a chic and trendy look. (Think Coco Chanel and her timeless piles of pearls!)
4. Play with all different types of jewelry to create a look as unique as you are. Add initials, other words of significance for a super personal look. For something more elegant, layer simple chains for a subtle, sexy look. Play with different lines, like horizontal bars or triangle shapes, for a visual contrast.
