2021 Pantone Color of the Year
The color psychology experts at Pantone have a unique aptitude for reading the room. This time last year, they announced the 2020 Color of the Year as Classic Blue. Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, stated “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith… Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective, and open the flow of communication” (via Pantone). As we pause here at the final countdown of 2020, we can’t help but marvel at how this color selection was curiously accurate at the turn of the decade without knowing what was to come in the year ahead.
As we set our sights – and our hopes – on the refreshed promise of a new year, the Pantone Institute has flexed their emotional intelligence once again. The experts announced the color of 2021, and for the second time in its 20+ year history, they chose to blend two hues. In Pantone’s official announcement, Eiseman explains, “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit” (via Pantone).

We are here for the powerful theme behind Illuminating yellow and Ultimate Gray. After a year that tested us with challenge after challenge, the joint message of strength and hope promises a different energy ahead of 2021. At Uneek headquarters, these two color selections resonate deeply with our team. The warm Illuminating yellow shade reminds us of the classic yellow gold metal, and Ultimate Gray is reminiscent of our brand color. Here’s how we’re going to manifest the Pantone Color of the Year in 2021.
PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray
Ultimate Gray represents feelings of composure and resilience. This steadfast color could not come at a better time as we mark the end of a year brimming with uncertainty and start to feel cautiously optimistic about the next trip around the sun. As we put the chaos of 2020 behind us, it’s comforting to be emblazoned with a color that communicates a strong foundation.
In a happy coincidence, our primary brand color at Uneek is also gray. Uneek Jewelry’s variation of this shade is a nod to our respect for tradition and rich history in the jewelry industry. Our jewelry collection is a blend of the bold spirit of contemporary American culture paired with the unparalleled attention to detail from ancient disciplines. This marriage of old and new builds a firm foundation for our brand.
PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating
When we think of Illuminating’s bright hue, we also think of yellow gold’s legacy and their shared symbolism of strength and positivity. Since as early as 3000 BCE, yellow gold has been celebrated throughout history. In the late 20th century, yellow gold was the quintessential choice for wedding bands and engagement rings. It was then made popular again by the iconic three-stone engagement ring worn by Meghan Markle in 2017.
Gold is a distant cousin to the shade of yellow, and therefore their meaning and beauty overlap. Both of these colors represent warmth, love, and optimism. Gifting gold jewelry holds a great deal of meaning because it embodies the true value of a relationship. Empowered by the Pantone Color of the Year, yellow gold will hit a new emotional cord in 2021. If you’re also feeling inspired by this story of color, you can explore our collection of yellow gold pieces here.
As we tread carefully into 2021, we feel inspired by our Uneek family and community of fellow artists. Leatrice Eiseman put it perfectly when she said that our need for something encouraging and uplifting is essential to the human spirit. When the clock strikes midnight on January 1st, know that we are cheering for each and every one of you with the hopefulness of Illuminating yellow and the strength of Ultimate Gray in our hearts.
