2021 Engagement Ring Trends
“2020 was a year of sentiments, re-capturing moments, and hope for the future.” – Riya Javier, Uneek Jewelry Director of Merchandising
Repeat after us: Love is not canceled. The difficult days only strengthen the power of love. With the hope that 2021 brings, we anticipate a resurgence of timeless trends in the engagement ring industry. Putting life on pause made us reevaluate our lifestyles and savor the simple, beautiful pleasures with more intention. This refocused mindset extended into engagement ring designs and, based on this shift, our team has placed their predictions for what we’ll see in 2021.
Mixed Metals
“Yellow gold is back and rose gold is the runner-up for fashion bands. White gold and platinum still serve as the industry’s most popular engagement rings.” – Benjamin Javaheri, Founding President and Master Designer
“Yellow gold is back big time.” – Gill Alcantara, Uneek Jewelry Customer Relations Specialist
We anticipate a lively mix of metals in bridal jewelry. While modern metals like platinum and white gold will continue to reign in popularity, classic yellow gold is making a noteworthy comeback. Just like the renewal of tie-dye, biker shorts, and 90s nostalgia in 2020, it’s back to the basics with engagement ring styles too. A classic solitaire set in a polished yellow gold band will no longer be a vintage relic of the past.
Feminine rose gold is also on the rise. The warm hue of this romantic option pairs beautifully with the fiery brilliance of a diamond center stone. You’ll also see more rose gold accents in a mix and match bridal stack—but more on stackables later!
Center Stones
“Oval shapes are hot but an emerald cut and pear shape are becoming the new retro stone.” – Benjamin Javaheri, Founding President and Master Designer
Oval Solitaire
Oval diamonds took off last year, and we don’t expect this trend to slow down anytime soon. In fact, we’ll see more interest in larger ovals paired with a thin band to enhance the stone’s size and shape. The large surface area of an oval stone lengthens the finger and ups the wow-factor. These center stones are a very close second to the brilliance of a traditional round diamond.
Emerald-Cut
Oh, you fancy, huh? Emerald diamonds are one of the most popular of the fancy-cuts and will continue to be a fan-favorite for brides this year. The clean, linear facets of an emerald diamond symbolize a strong, bold woman—definitely on-brand for 2021. This versatile stone also looks good with a variety of settings, from a single solitaire to a glam three-stone design. We anticipate seeing a lot more of this fashion-forward option this year.
Pear Shape
The chic, retro curves of a pear-shaped diamond are on the rise. Similar to an oval cut, pear-shaped center stones elongate the finger and boast a fiery brilliance close to a round diamond. Following the crowd as fashion returns to the classics, we predict more demand for this distinctive shape in 2021.
Other Trends to Watch
“Stacking is stronger than ever.” – Benjamin Javaheri, Founding President and Master Designer
“Yellow gold is back especially in fashion jewelry where stacking is the name of the game.” – Ann Vicente, Marketing Coordinator
Bridal Stackables
Bridal stacks are only getting bigger and more dynamic in 2021. Whether you’re a new bride is planning your dream stack or a married woman with your eyes on an upgrade, the bridal stack trend is growing and diversifying. Custom creations will mean more in this new season of life. A personalized stack conveys meaning and beauty in a new, different way compared to a traditional bridal set. We’ll see both monochromatic stacks or mixed metals as this trend continues to shine.
“Colored engagement stones such as blue sapphires or emeralds will add a little unexpected twist to the traditional diamond centerpiece.” – Ann Vicente, Marketing Coordinator
“Yellows and Blue Sapphires will be huge this year just cause it’s a lot more vibrant in color, more hopeful.” – Gill Alcantara, Uneek Jewelry Customer Relations Specialist
Colored Gemstones
With so much time to daydream, women will be thinking outside the box regarding their engagement ring design. We anticipate a surge in colored engagement rings as people flex their creativity. We’ll see more demand for pink diamonds, yellow diamonds, blue sapphires, and emeralds, representing the hope for a brighter future on the horizon.
“Custom designs adding a personal, more intimate story behind the ring, like Ariana Grande’s engagement ring will also be a preferred style this year.” – Ann Vicente, Marketing Coordinator
“I think with the pandemic still lurking in the background, people will be a lot more creative when it comes to Bridal, they have more time in their hands to get their rings ‘personalized.’” – Gill Alcantara, Uneek Jewelry Customer Relations Specialist
Custom Rings
After Ariana Grande’s scroll-stopping engagement announcement, we’ll see this unique celebrity trend impact the buying process. Ariana set the standard of sentiment with a stunning modern stone paired with a meaningful pearl from her grandmother’s collection. Everything feels more romantic after the heartbreak of 2020, so custom designs will take flight. In the same way that people are rethinking their home interiors or taking control of their career paths, women will want to play a larger role in creating and designing their symbols of love.
There’s no doubt that 2021 will be an emotionally-charged year. We’re excited to see how these heightened passions translate to fashion and bridal trends. Our biggest piece of advice when choosing your engagement ring is to celebrate your individuality and choose a design that will purposefully fit in with your love and lifestyle.
